About us In 1990 herbalist Diana Roberts and naturopath Pauline McCabe realised it would be desirable to offer the community of Nimbin more affordable access to traditional and complementary health care than was generally available. They closed their private practise and opened an over-the-counter herbal and homeopathic dispensary, Nimbin Apothecary, (apothecary traditionally meaning chemist or pharmacist). The Nimbin Apothecary concept, welcomed by the local community and numerous visitors to the village, quickly tripled in size. In line with increasing demand for traditional and complementary healthcare in Australia, the Nimbin Apothecary continues to grow. Diana Roberts and Colleen Hadley currently own and manage the business. People feeling unwell or seeking health advice can simply drop in and talk to a qualified practitioner. If a concern cannot be addressed over-the-counter an appointment can be made with one of the many practitioners operating in conjunction with the Apothecary. These include naturopaths, herbalists, homeopaths, masseurs, acupuncturists, body workers, doctors, tarot readers, psychics and holographic kineticists. Practitioners at the Nimbin Apothecary believe holistic care, care that pays attention to the whole person (mind, body and spirit), is essential to maintaining wellbeing. While treating chronic and acute health care conditions is important, the Nimbin Apothecary also has a major role to play in health education. Promoting good health to prevent ill health is vital. The benefits ultimately lead to greater self-responsibility for health, less reliance on drugs, reduced costs to the community, healthier people and a healthier planet. In addition, gaining knowledge of natural healing and health promotion, and being able to treat simple health problems from home, is empowering for the individual and their family. Drop in for a visit next time you’re in Nimbin village.
